93. The final countdown
In the last chapter, Tusnelda and Martin managed to find some form of joint healing. Elijah made a wedding cake that didn’t quite live up to his ambitions, but still. Don is still struggling to find his identity and he and Rasmus made an important agreement. Alice became Blue, and she became a bit tipsy and met several strange people in a bar. In this chapter, time seems to stand still, but for some characters the countdown have begun. NB: There will be a few nudities in this episode, but nothing that should cross the line.
*****
Early morning in Brindleton Bay
Rasmus feels fresh and well-rested, so he quietly slips out of bed so as not to wake Izumi.
With quick steps he walks towards the kitchen to prepare the family’s breakfast.
It feels like it’s going to be a nice calm morning.
He adds just the right amount of sea salt to the egg mixture. Several years as a chef’s apprentice have given him a keen sense of taste.
*****
He sits down at the dining table to enjoy his breakfast undisturbed. He has to go to work tonight and he knows it will be busy. It always is.
He hears the door to Fabio’s room open and sees him walking across the floor.
To his surprise, he is already fully dressed.
“Good morning Fabio, breakfast is ready on the kitchen table.”
Fabio sits down next to Rasmus and watches him eat his egg and toast with enjoyment.
“Can we talk about something I’ve been thinking about, Rasmus?” Fabio asks.
“Yes of course, Fabio. What’s on your mind?” Rasmus asks seriously.
“I’ve been thinking about how you rarely make pancakes. You make the best pancakes, so it’s almost a waste of your talent that we don’t get them very often.” says Fabio seriously.
“I know you like pancakes, but they contain lots of sugar. Scrambled eggs are full of healthy proteins that are important for your body to grow. Eggs contains many of the nutrients you need, such as vitamin B12 and D as well as selenium” explains Rasmus.
Fabio looks like he’s not really listening. Like most children, he very quickly closes his ears to repeated indifferent informations.
“Thank you for breakfast Rasmus. I am going to school now.” He says politely.
“Do you have to go already? School doesn’t start until almost an hour?” Rasmus asks in surprise.
There is an explanation. Yesterday, Fabio became best friends with Jayden. They have agreed to play together before class so there is no time to waste.

Morning in San Myshuno
First thing this morning, Elijah pours coffee into the coffee machine.
It’s an important day today and he doesn’t feel fully rested, on the other hand it’s impossible for him to sleep anymore.
Fatima is still sleeping soundly, as if nothing can shake her peace this morning.
A hissing sound of steam tells Elijah that the coffee is ready and he fills his mug almost to the brim.
With the mug in hand, he walks across the kitchen.
He continues into his photo studio.
He sits down on the couch next to Ambrosius. The cat doesn’t seem to have moved since last night.
He casts a suspicious glance at the black liquid. He has always considered coffee a necessity to stay awake during demanding work tasks, but Fatima seems to love coffee for its taste
Now that his thoughts are on Fatima, she comes as if summoned by an inaudible voice.
It may also be the smell of coffee that has found its way into the bedroom.
She quickly glances up at the ceiling as Elijah still seems petrified in his speculations over the coffee.
If you follow her gaze you see a couple of Elijah’s latest posters called Cat Woman. On one of the posters, Ambrosius sends a stunned look at the viewer. As he tries to understand the change from being a street cat on Deadgrass Isle to his current existence on a warm and cozy couch.
Ambrosius’ new life is quiet, safe and comfortable. A dream life for a lazy cat.
It seems that Elijah finally realizes that this coffee is tasty in addition to having an invigorating effect.
He walks quickly towards the kitchen sink to wash the mug.
*****
Elijah has prepared a simple serving breakfast. It should do well with some solid food on top of the coffee.
Fatima finishes her morning ritual in the bathroom and goes straight to pour herself a mug of coffee.
On top of the visits of uninvited neighbors in recent days, they are both enjoying the peace.
Elijah collects the dishes and Fatima smiles to herself. She has had her very last day at the clinic and tonight she and Elijah have invited all their friends to their wedding. Her life change has already begun.
She takes another big sip from the coffee mug. Everything is pointing towards it being a lovely day.

Morning in Brindleton Bay
Izumi rocks big and heavy over the floor. The countdown to the birth is well under way and everything is ready for the impending birth.
Her positive expectations give her a light, almost flirtatious vibe.
Rasmus is in the garden to water his herbs.
Izumi finds a dress that isn’t too tight over her baby bump. She feels like she’s been pregnant for ages and she’s looking forward to it all being over.
She finds Brooke on the kitchen table right next to the plate of breakfast. Brooke has always been a fairly well-behaved cat (apart from her whiny begging), but it’s like she’s gotten new ideas from observing Fie and Futte’s ill-mannered behavior.
Izumi scolds her. As if she, Brooke, would really condescend to eat stolen food?!
Brook quickly runs away from the tempting eggs while Izumi takes a plate to the dining table.
Izumi sees Rasmus walking across the floor towards the bathroom to take a shower.
She stands up and silences Futte’s meowing begging.
She heads to the kitchen sink to do the dishes.
She massages her lower back while looking out at the blue cloudless sky.

Morning in San Myshuno
Fatima eats her breakfast while she and Elijah talk about today’s program.
“So what exactly are you and Jade going to do today?” Elijah asks.
Ambrosius has finally left the sofa after almost ten hours of sleep. Now he comes into the living room to get some food and get some pleasant cuddling.
“She’s going to help me get dressed for the wedding party tonight.” replies Fatima.
“But it can’t take all day, can it?” Elijah asks.
Elijah fantasizes about what ideas Fatima and Jade have. He remembers one particular evening when Fatima completely took matters into her own hands. It was a nice surprise, but perhaps not suitable for a wedding if she arrives in a black negligee and chains.
Whatever Fatima has planned seems to give her excited anticipation.
Ambrosius has eaten and is approaching Fatima for his morning cuddling.
However, Elijah gets ahead of him. Ambrosius gradually knows his people. Once they are in that mood he can forget all about their attention.
“Perhaps I could go with you and give some good advice on the styling?” Elijah says seriously.
“I appreciate your offer Elijah, but not today.” she replies.
*****
However, Fatima is not completely dismissive of all his proposals and thus Ambrosius is right in his prediction. No one is thinking of scratching him behind the ear for the next while.
Since there doesn’t seem to be anything wicked going on that doesn’t stand the light of day, everyone is hereby allowed to enjoy the lovely pink sparks.

Morning in Brindleton Bay
Izumi caresses her big baby belly.
“You guys should be ready to go.” she whispers softly
Here Rasmus comes fresh from his shower.
“Izumi, I’ve been thinking we should do a photoshoot. As a kind of memorial for the children’s future legacy.” he says.
“That’s an excellent idea, Rasmus.” she says happily.
*****
They actually already did a photo shoot for their wedding invitations, but it’s already been a long time.
I will free the readers to see the many lineups. Hopefully one day I will rearrange the many pictures they have on the wall.
“What do you think Izumi, will it be weeks or days from now?” asks Rasmus.
“I long to meet them as much as you do.” she says gently.
“I have a proposal that might speed up the process.” she says.
It is impossible to say whether this is a special thing for pregnant Sims that makes Izumi is extremely flirtatious, but the fact is that Rasmus has no objections.
Maybe it’s a cure that will boost the birth.
To confirm that it is not a mistake when Izumi speaks in the plural about her upcoming birth, I can reveal here that two cribs are already ready in a corner of the bedroom. Izumi and Rasmus are expecting twins.
*****
Morning in San Myshuno
Fatima takes a shower after they get out of bed for the second time this morning. She and Elijah will travel together to the Waterside Warble when she’s done. Later on, Jade will arrive.
Elijah is stunned by some photos he took of Fatima a few weeks ago. They now have a place on the wall in the newly renovated bathroom.
“Tell me Elijah, shouldn’t these belong in the bedroom?” she asks.
“Well, I don’t see why. They fit perfectly with this black and white theme in the bathroom.” he says with the greatest obviousness.
“I think they seem a bit private, but if you really think so.” she says, a little unsure of being exposed, with these portraits.
“You are beautiful Fatima, I see no reason to hide it from the world.” he replies.
She gives him a light kiss on the cheek. Everyone thinks she’s so confident. Only he is allowed to see her underlying vulnerability. It takes some getting used to shedding her usual shield.
“Aren’t you going to shower and get dressed, or should I go to the Spice Market with you dressed as a streaking Adonis?” she teases.
It seems that Elijah lets the voice of reason prevail. Sure, he is an artist, but his mission is not to create unnecessary attention.
*****
At the same time in Brindleton Bay
“It seems we have awakened them from their slumber.” Izumi says, keeping a firm hold on her belly. Something is moving in there.
“I apologize for the interruption little buggers.” Rasmus says.
“Do you think we squeezed them?” he asks worriedly.
“I don’t think so. If they feel the space is getting too tight, I would advise them to come out into the light.” Izumi says in a firm voice.
“You should listen to your mother. We are ready for you now.” adds Rasmus.
“Well Rasmus, would you like to join me for an episode of Dreamhouse Decorator? The new season starts in just twenty minutes and I’m going to get comfy on the couch and watch this episode.” Izumi says.
“I think I’ll skip it and do some training.” Rasmus quickly answers.
Rasmus will never be a fan of the extravagant host in Hawaiian shirt and Stetson hat. In his eyes, he is a charlatan who tries to seduce the viewers to excessive expenses.

Morning in Oasis Springs
Today, Don has chosen to visit the Burners & Builders gym located in his local area. He hasn’t had much luck getting trainees in the Harbor Quarter Gym, so it’s worth looking at new avenues.
It’s scorching hot outside, so it feels great to step inside the dim cold gym.
He immediately spots a figure who looks like he needs some expert guidance.
“Hello my friend. Let me introduce myself. My name is Don Lothario and I am a trained coach. I would like to offer my assistance to make your training more effective.”
“No, no! It must be a misunderstanding. I haven’t hired a coach. I’m just here to make fitness at my own pace.” the guy rejects in shock.
“My service is free for you. You seem to be in a good starting point, but you can do better. Follow me and say: I’m strong, I’m brave, I can do it!” Don says.
“I’m strong, I’m brave, I can do it.” mutters the guy, clenching his fists.
“Well done! Now I would suggest you start with ten minutes on the treadmill to warm up your muscles and then I’ll give you new instructions.” Don exclaims with enthusiasm.
The guy looks towards the treadmills and it’s like he’s only now realizing what he’s getting himself into. His shoulders sag noticeably.
“I’m sorry mr. but I don’t have time for this. I suddenly remember I promised to visit my mother for lunch so I’m sorry. Maybe another time.” the guy apologizes.
Don clearly senses that there won’t be another time. Just now, he feels he has chosen the worst career because it is almost impossible to find willing trainees. Everyone seems to have a stupid excuse. He doesn’t understand their lack of character.
Since he doesn’t see any other possible candidates, he chooses to use the treadmill himself. He loves to use his body for physical challenges. It gives him peace of mind.
What Don doesn’t notice is someone else has seen him.
It looks like Dina has heard some very compromising gossip about Don from her mother, so she doesn’t look thrilled.
One has to wonder that she comes closer, but maybe she has a need to give a comment about the mischief he has put Katrina and their whole family through.
However, Don is preoccupied with his own problems until she lets out a deep sigh.
“Dina! How are you?” Don says in surprise.
Dina obviously has a lot she needs to get rid of.
“Well you might say the storm has calmed down, but living with my mother and listening to all her hysterical and tearful accusations about how you stole her best years. It’s been hell, Don. I have only you to blame for that.”
After a short pause, she continues…..
“I wonder if she’s starting to see anyone? Yesterday she started singing over the dishes… Actually, I don’t care to tell you because it’s none of your business. You’re as good as dead so I wouldn’t advise you to seek us out anymore. Goodbye Don.”
Afterwards, Dina turns her back on Don and leaves.
Don stays back on the treadmill, a whole bunch of information richer. Information he hasn’t asked for. He certainly had no plans to revisit Katrina.
Dina looks neither relieved nor happier as she leaves.
Neither does Don…. Maybe it was a stupid idea to seek out this gym? Not that there is any danger of meeting Nina ore Katrina. They will hardly think of exercising in a gym.
He suddenly feels that life is much more complicated than he ever realized. The world as he knows it changes around him and doubts have begun to hit him incessantly when he is completely unprepared. – Maybe he should take a shower and return home to his lodgings. Surely he can manage that.
*****
Brindleton Bay
Although Rasmus never comes to the Harbor Quarter Gym and trains with his friends anymore, he is quite diligent with the punching bag in the garden. He loves boxing, as a vent for his innate hot temper. It’s one of the reasons why he always appears calm.
It has been a good morning and he gives the punching bag a playful bump with his hip.
Inside the living room, Izumi is sitting in front of the TV. Her favorite program Dreamhouse Decorator has just started.
She sits relaxed and knits another baby onesie while she dreams of a career as a decorator.
She knows it’s not very realistic right now, but she’s allowed to dream. Maybe sometime when the kids start school?
She hears Rasmus disappear into the toilet.
An education as a decorator has long future prospects, but she doesn’t want to regret it. You can’t get everything an she has won a loving and loyal husband and will soon be the mother of two more children. She has always dreamed of a big family.
Rasmus goes to the sink to wash his hands when he hears the sound of running water.
The damn toilet has once again suffered a leak.
There is no way around it. He has to get to grips with the pipe wrench and hope he can fix the leak.
Izumi sits on the couch and suddenly feels a pain she can’t ignore.
She tries to massage herself on the back. It can’t be…?
She hears Rasmus go out the front door.
It feels like a woe. She lets out an almost silent whimper which makes Brooke approach across the floor.
Rasmus unsuspectingly goes towards the waste bin with some trash.
Inside the living room, the crisis seems to be over. Brooke stretches comfortably and curls into a ball next to Izumi. They are good friends after all.
Izumi looks with interest at the TV where the host has just appeared. For her sake, labor can wait a few more hours.

Spice Market in San Myshuno
Fatima and Elijah has just arrived at the Spice Market. They will have some lunch together before Jade will arrive to pick up Fatima.
Suddenly Fatima stops as she sees a stray dog.
“Don’t go further Elijah. It could be dangerous.” she says.
“It’s just a dog Fatima. It looks peaceful to me.” he says and continues.
The dog gets up when it hears Elijah approaching.
He cautiously holds out his hand and it responds with an angry growl.
“Hey, calm down. I don’t want any harm” he says.
“You see, I’m here to have lunch with my girlfriend and she doesn’t dare approach if you have that attitude.” he explains.
The dog seems to be listening attentively.
Elijah ends the conversation by giving it a treat. This stray seams friendly.
*****
“You shouldn’t approach wild dogs. Imagine if it had attacked you?” protested Fatima.
“There’s no danger Fatima. She’s a nice dog.” Elijah replies.
“You see Fatima, dogs have a different character than cats. They are very cooperative and eager to communicate with people.” Elijah says.
As Elijah goes on to describe the deep friendship he had with his childhood dog, the stray dog sets off on new adventures.
Fatima listens a little surprised to his lecture. She had no idea Elijah had a dog when he was a child. They never talked about it. It’s probably because Elijah doesn’t think dogs should live in an apartment.
Since the stray has left the area, Fatima and Elijah can eat their lunch without other concerns.
After the meal they both go into the bar at the Waterside Warble to enjoy a drink while waiting for Jade.

Back in Brindleton Bay
For Izumi, there is no doubt anymore. The contractions have started to increase.
In the background, Fie and Futte are having a minor argument about who has the right to lick the other’s ears.
They each run in fright when they hear Izumi making a plaintive sound.
Rasmus is in the process of beating an invisible enemy when Brooke comes running.
“Rasmus! You must help Izumi!” she meows loudly.
When Rasmus doesn’t respond, she starts at an increased volume.
“MEOW!!!”
“Hey Brooke, are you bored?” Rasmus says kindly.
When Rasmus takes her in his arms to give her a hug, she sends him an outraged look.
How ignorant can humans be?
Inside the house, Izumi is still preoccupied with the Dreamhouse Decorator.
Rasmus doesn’t really see her because when he discovers the fool still appearing on TV, he hurries on.
Only the readers see Izumi’s tormented expression.
Then the contractions subside and Izumi caresses her big baby belly. It will most likely be tonight that she will see them.
Brooke comes running to see how things are going but to her surprise Izumi looks like she’s never been in any pain.
Rasmus collects laundry. The laundry basket always seems to be full of dirty clothes.
He walks across the floor with the laundry towards the kitchen.
*****
He has just loaded the washing machine when he hears Izumi moaning loudly.
“Rasmus…. I think it’s time.” she wails.
“What!? Is it time? What should I do” he says in shock.
Then the answer comes to him from his subconscious. Of course. What an idiot has is… They’ve talked about this countless times and they planned it all in detail.
He grabs the cell phone and calls Don’s number.
*****
The the Burners & Builders gym in Oasis Springs
Don has just stepped out of the shower when his cell phone rings. He looks at the display. It’s Rasmus.
“Hello my friend, what’s up?”
“I’m fine I think, but it’s Izumi… Looks like we’re going to the hospital. Can you come over and take care of Fabio?”
“Of course Rasmus. I promised. I’ll gather my things and then I’ll be there immediately.”
“That’s fine Don….but actually I don’t think you need to run head over heels.”
Don looks at his cell phone. That was a strange answer. Either Izumi is giving birth or she isn’t. Rasmus seems somewhat confused.
*****
Brindleton Bay
Rasmus is actually somewhat confused. He stands and looks at Izumi who has fallen asleep on the couch. Is it a good sign or does it mean danger?
Should he do something?
To at least do something, he removes a hairball one of the cats has left on the floor.
Maybe he should call the midwife? She should be able to guide him in what to do.
*****
The Waterside Warble in San Myshuno
“So Jade, what do you have planned for Fatima. Remember the wedding starts at 7pm and I’d hate to miss her.” says Elijah.
Jade looks at Elijah.
“Take it easy Elijah. I have not planned an episode of run away bride. I will take her to a masseur. Just a few relaxing hours before tonight,” she replies.
“Masseur!? What are you going to do with a masseur?” Elijah asks, turning to Fatima in wonder.
“Sounds good to my ears” says Fatima, looking towards Jade.
“Don’t be nervous Elijah, I’ll be on time.” Fatima says and blows him a kiss.
“Thank you Fatima.” he replies with an unusual vulnerability.
“Deep down, I’m still an insecure guy with pimples all over my face.” he apologizes.
“I know Elijah.” she replies gently.
A moment later, Marcus arrives and Jade stands up.
Things seem to be going extremely well between them.
“I can definitely give you a nice massage Fatima. Looks like your friends have been busy.” Elijah says with a smirk.
“You’re going to hang on to me, Elijah and I will definitely promise you I won’t give a massage.” interjects Marcus.
Jade goes ahead and Fatima quickly follows.
*****
Brindleton Bay
Don has just arrived at Rasmus’s and he is welcomed with a big warm hug.
“Good to see you Don.” Rasmus says relieved. Izumi is still sleeping and he feels quite insecure about making the decisions alone.
They sit together on a bench in front of the house.
“Izumi is sleeping now. I spoke to the midwife and she assured me that as long as the contractions are this random there is no need to rush.” says Rasmus.
“I don’t understand how you can handle this Rasmus…I mean a childbirth, not something I’d know anything about.” Don says.
“I’m not an expert either, but I’m trying to stay calm. The midwife assured me that everything sounds normal, but she said we should come by later this afternoon for a checkup.” Rasmus says wisely.
“Man listen to you Rasmus, you sound so grown up.” Don says.
“I guess we should both be grown up by now?” Rasmus replies kindly.
Don’s not entirely sure he buys into that assumption.
He looks up when he hears Izumi coming down the stairs and therefore avoids answering.
“Hey guys!” she says in a flirtatious tone.
Don waves a little surprised.
He had imagined Izumi in a much more tense state, but right now the cupids fly unrestrained in the air between Rasmus and her.
“Wow! Look at you Izumi. You look amazing, so how do you feel?” Rasmus asks kindly.
Don quickly stands up. He suddenly feels like an awkward third note in a duet.
“Right now I feel pretty fresh and rested.” she replies.
“Well I guess that’s a good sign huh?” replies Rasmus. He’s having a bit of a hard time deciphering Izumi’s very mixed signals. Does that mean that it all was a false alarm? How is he supposed to know.
“Did you remember to cancel your work?” Izumi asks.
“What? Oh!” says Rasmus. So Izumi still thinks she’s going to give birth tonight?
He quickly calls work and says they have to find a replacement for tonight.
“Will you give my back a massage?” Izumi asks.
“This is so nice, Rasmus.” she sighs.
“I think I’ll get some food ready for Fabio to come home from school. That is, if you are okay?” says Rasmus questioningly.
“I’m perfectly fine.” she says.
Futte sits down in front of the bench as Rasmus gets up.
Don has found a cop show on TV.
Izumi chats with Futte. Everything seems completely everyday and ordinary, as if time once again stands still.
Rasmus goes towards the kitchen, while Don remains seated in front of the TV. He looks like he doesn’t really know what’s going on.
A guy in a striped prison uniform writes a love letter. Is this a true crime or rather a sitcom?
Outside on the lawn, Izumi plays with Futte. It can be seen once again that her mood is very flirtatious.
Rasmus has started making sandwiches.
Don seems to be considering whether he really wants to continue this romantic waste of time.
With absolutely nothing happening in Brindleton Bay, it’s time to move on.

Newcrest at the Perfect Balance Spa
“This is so cool Jade. I didn’t even know this place existed.”
“I heard about it from a colleague. Shall we go in?” Jade asks.
They lock their clothes in the wardrobes and change into bathrobes.
Jade leads the way up the stairs.
Jade disappears into another room to receive a manicure while Fatima enters a room with two massage tables.
She presents herself to the masseur who is ready to receive her.
She prepares herself on the assigned massage table and hears the masseur open a bottle. A strong scent of lavender and vanilla reaches her nostrils.
He warms the oil between his palms.
“Are you ready for a relaxing treatment ma’am?” he says.
Is she ready? She confidently prepares herself for half an hour of pampering by his trained hands.
*****
Meanwhile at The Waterside Warble
“Since you don’t want to give me a massage and I’m in no mood to get drunk before my wedding, what are we going to do to pass the time Marcus?” Elias asks eagerly.
“Follow me, I’ve got a challenge for you.” Marcus replies.
It was actually Jade’s idea for him and Elijah to spend a few hours together as she claimed they have a lot in common. His own opinion is that Elias is a superficial bohemian, without any kind of sensible employment and goal in life. However, Elijah is quite active, so as Jade suggested, are they going to play basketball in the Spice Market square.
*****
To begin with, they start with a competition in hitting the basket. They are roughly equal in their ability to score goals.
In fact, it looks like they are both starting to enjoy the relaxed competition.
“Let me challenge you, Marcus. Can you do this?” Elijah says confidently, letting the ball spin around on his fingertips.
As they are both big egos who like to show off, they continue to demonstrate to each other how handy they are with the ball.
After a while they need a break.
“I have to say so Elijah. I’m impressed. I had no idea you had those talents.” says Marcus.
“I’m assuming we don’t really know that much about each other, do we?” Elijah says kindly.
Until now, he had always considered Marcus a fool who lives in his own distant educated unreality. Actually, he is quite straightforward when he drops the uniform and the arrogant facade.
“I will give you a suggestion Elijah. I’m the club leader of the Powerhouse Club. We’re a group of sports enthusiasts based at the Harbor Quarter Gym in Windenburg. Maybe you’d like to join?” Marcus says seriously.
“Thank you Marcus. I’ll definitely consider.” says Elijah.
We will now zoom out from Elijah and Marcus’ budding friendship as the camera has caught Akira walking with Alexis’ dog Minnie. That dog absolutely needs a visit to the vet.

Next to the spa outside Newcrest Beauty Salon
After the massage and pedicure, Fatima feels almost floating and she gives Jade a big hug.
“I’m so overwhelmed Jade. I don’t think I’ve ever received so much pampering in one day.” says Fatima with a big smile on her face.
“Well, you’re not done yet Fatima. It’s time to gear up for the big moment.” Jade replies.
Fatima looks in through some large windows and can see a young red-haired woman waiting for them.
“Hello, my name is Emily and I will be your hairdresser and stylist for today. Tell me something about what you dream you should look like.” greets Emily welcomingly.
“Hi Emily, I’m Fatima. I don’t really know what I’m dreaming about except to surprise Elijah in a positive way.” she answers a little unsure.
“I can certainly help you with that. Please sit down and I’ll find a bathrobe.” Emily says confidently.
Fatima sends Jade a questioning look, but she just gets an encouraging smile in return.
*****
“You have very thick and healthy hair.” Emily says kindly.
“I’d say dull and gray.” sighs Fatima.
“Not at all. We can do something about the color and as for the hairstyle…What will you allow me to do? Can I take some of the length or do you prefer an updo hairstyle? Maybe with a crown?” Emily asks.
“I don’t really think I’m the princess type.” Fatima answers hesitantly.
“Tell me about yourself Fatima. What type are you? Meanwhile I will begin to remove some of the most worn hair ends.” Emily says and pulls out the barber’s scissors.
Fatima looks seriously at her own reflection. What should she answer? She is used to being there for others, not that others are there for her.
However, the lack of an answer does not stop Emily from asking interested questions and little by little she forms a picture of the woman in front of her.
At the back of the salon, we find Jade, who has sat down comfortably. She has found an exciting book on personal styling in the salon’s bookshelf and here she will spend some time reading, during Fatima’s transformation.
Inside, hairdresser Emily is working her magic.
We will leave the salon for a while as the camera captures a dog that will arouse recognition for most regular readers.
It cannot be revealed where it is going, just as I cannot reveal what is happening with Fatima’s transformation. We may see it later.

Afternoon in Brindleton Bay
When Fabio comes home from school he sees that Don is back and he cheers loudly and he gives him a huge hug.
“Hi kiddo! Good to see you.” Don says touched.
“Your mother and Rasmus are in their bedroom, but Rasmus has prepared some sandwiches for you.” Don says.
Rasmus and Izumi aren’t exactly in the bedroom, but when you see Izumi it might well be where they risk ending up.
“So how was school Fabio. Did you have a good day?” Don asks kindly.
“Yeah, I’ve been playing with my new friend, His name is Jayden.” replies Fabio.
“I think it’s so good for you to have a friend your own age.” Don says eagerly.
They are interrupted by a loud sound, like a clank from the bathroom.
“What do you think my mom and Rasmus are doing Don? I think I’ll go and see.” says Fabio.
“I think you might be better off leaving them alone, Fabio…..”
“….sometimes adults just do adult things that are not for children to participate in.” Don says.
It may turn out that Don is right, but not quite in the way he imagines.
“We should get a new toilet. It can’t be meant to leak all the time.” Izumi says.
“I can fix it. There’s no need to spend any expense on it.” Rasmus replies.
“I saw in Dreamhouse Decorator that there are new, much more sustainable toilets on the market.” insists Izumi.
“I can imagine.” mutters Rasmus a little annoyed at having to be reminded of the bloated TV host again.
At the sound of the voices from the bathroom, Don has become convinced that nothing wicked is going on out there, so he doesn’t try to stop Fabio.
“Hi mom! What are you guys doing?” Fabio asks.
“Fabio! It’s very unhygienic to eat in a toilet!” Izumi exclaims.
Maybe Don should have stopped Fabio anyway, but he doesn’t seem to give it a second thought. He is more concerned with how delicious Rasmus can make an ordinary sandwich taste. What is his secret?
*****
“Fabio, we have called Don because there is a high probability that your siblings will be born tonight. Don will look after you while Rasmus and I go to the hospital.” Izumi explains.
“But how do you know? Who told you?” Fabio asks.
Fabio gently puts a hand against her baby belly to feel if the babies are kicking around in there.
“They are running out of space, so you could say they themselves are telling me it is time.” Izumi smiles.
“I can’t hear them saying anything, Mom.”
“They haven’t learned to talk yet, but they can hear you Fabio and when they are born, you can teach them how to speak.” Izumi says.
“Can I? Really? It’s so cool!” exults Fabio.

Newcrest Beauty Salon
Fatima looks at her own reflection. Her hair has been oiled and her hairstyle is cut. Now she is sitting with her hair wrapped in a warm towel and waiting for her makeup to be applied.
Emily scrutinizes her in order to determine her skin type and find a color shell that perfectly matches her taint.
She starts by laying a basic foundation.
Then she continues concentrated with the entire palette of eye shadows, eyeliner and lipstick. Like a painter filling her canvas.
“I would say you are done, Fatima! Take a look and let me know what you think.” Emily says with a satisfied face.
She discreetly steps to the side.
Fatima looks at her face from several sides. The heavy makeup makes her feel like she’s wearing a mask, but she likes it. The colors are discreet enough to look natural.
Emily stands a little distance and looks at her smiling.
“I love it Emily!” Fatima says and gives her a hug.
“You look smashing, Fatima!” Jade adds from the background.
“There’s still some time before you need to get dressed, so why not let me do your nails?” Emily suggests welcomingly.
A little later, Fatima is assigned a comfortable armchair in an adjacent dressing room.
“Tell me Emily, are there any limits to your talent for styling?” Fatima asks, throwing her arms out excitedly.
“It’s just what I love to do.” Emily modestly replies.

Afternoon in Brindleton Bay
“Don, do you want to come out to the garden and watch me climb?” Fabio asks eagerly.
“Fabio, have you done your homework?” interrupts Rasmus.
Fabio sends Rasmus a disappointed look.
“But Don’s visiting….” he protests.
“He will be here until tomorrow, won’t you?” says Rasmus and looks encouragingly at Don.
“Well, Fabio, I think Rasmus knows best, so you’d better finish your homework first.” say Don.
*****
Since Don has a hard time denying Fabio any invitation, he ends up helping him with his homework.
Rasmus watches them from a distance. He knows Don never really did homework in his own school days, but Fabio is a smart boy so it probably won’t bother either of them.
“Don do you know anything about algebra?” Fabio suddenly asks.
“Algebra? I’m not sure if it’s a lizard or a crocodile.” Don says tentatively.
“No Don, you’re silly. We’re doing math. What’s a crocodile doing in math?” Fabio asks.
“Oh!? Math?” Don says, unable to come up with a sensible answer.
“Don’t worry, Don. I won’t be learning about algebra for another year. I had just heard some older boys talk about it. I was just wondering if you might know something about it?” Fabio replies.
“Nope, that’s not really my specialty.” Don says, relieved they can drop the subject.
Fabio completes the rest of the math tasks without further questions, so fortunately Don’s support only consists of being present.

Afternoon in San Myshuno
Marcus and Elijah have left the basketball court in favor of playing cards outside the Waterside Warble.
The sun is low in the sky, making the skies pale and the shadows long.
“It’s your turn.” says Marcus a little impatiently.
“Well, it looks like this isn’t really my game.” Elijah says with a shrug.
“But you know they say bad luck in gambling, luck in love…. I admit I’ve lost the game so what do you say we end the day with a barley brew before we part.” Elijah suggests.
*****
“I will admit that I have enjoyed this afternoon with you more than I anticipated, Elijah.” Marcus says seriously.
“Thank you and the same to you Marcus.” Elijah says in a soft tone.
There are now very few hours left before Elijah’s wedding, so after their toast they empty their glasses and go their separate ways to dress for the party.

Late afternoon in Brindleton bay
Izumi takes another nap, so Rasmus has challenged Don to a basketball goal competition. They have already been playing for a while and Don is doing surprisingly well.
Fabio sits with his cars in his play tent. Time almost seems to have stopped.
Don thumps the ball into the ground a few times before throwing.
“Yeah! I got you!” he cheers eagerly.
“Admit it Rasmus, I’m superior to you. You have become a slacker. You have neglected your training at the Gym for far too long. I could perhaps offer to become your personal trainer.” Don says.
Neither of them seem to notice that Izumi has come outside. There is no doubt anymore. The contractions have returned with increasing frequency.
“That’s a cheesy thing to say Don. I’ve got a family now. I can’t just fool around as I please, but how would you know? All you think about is filling your own pleasure.” says Rasmus angrily.
Izumi stands gasping and listening to them.
If only those two fools would stop their bickering immediately. An enmity between Rasmus and Don is the last thing she can handle now.
“Calm down, Rasmus, it wasn’t meant that way. I am sorry.” Don apologizes.
“Well it’s accepted Don, I don’t mean to belittle you but you always take things so superficially,” says Rasmus.
“Aoooowww!” Izumi wails.
“I’ll tell you Rasmus. Taking things easy doesn’t work for me anymore.” Don says.
The contraction is over for now and Izumi sits down on the bench.
It looks like Rasmus has finally noticed her.
Don is left as if trapped in his own speculations.
Don hears someone calling his name and he turns to see Fabio coming towards him.
“Hey kiddo!” he says.
Rasmus looks questioningly at Izumi.
“Should we be leaving?” he asks.
Izumi only responds with a groan as a new woe builds up.
Rasmus realizes the countdown is nearly over and he suddenly feels very dizzy.
“What’s happening to my mom. Will she be ok?” says Fabio.
“Your mother is about to give birth. She is going to the hospital Fabio and they will give her all the help she needs. Rasmus will be there for her. They will be ok.” Don says with a conviction that sounds like it comes from experience he doesn’t have.
Rasmus looks up and sees Don reassuring Fabio. He wasn’t quite fair just before. He knows Fabio has great confidence in Don and it is not without reason. Don is very caring when it comes to Fabio so they don’t have to worry. They can leave in peace of mind.

Half an hour later at the public hospital
The sun is about to leave a cloudless sky.
Inside the building, Izumi has just been directed to a maternity ward.
She walks with a surprised speed and Rasmus rushes after her.
Suddenly the water goes off and she leaves a large puddle on the floor. Someone else must take care of it.
They have been assigned examination room 3. They continue through the corridor until they reach the right door.
They both sit down to wait for the midwife to do an examination. Izumi feels miserably. Maybe the idea of a natural birth was a mistake? She just wants it to be over.

The Waterside Warble at sunset
The sun has sunk behind the horizon behind the Waterside Warble, leaving the sky in the most beautiful purple.
The table where Elijah and Marcus sat playing cards together a few hours ago is empty.
There are not many customers in the bar and in the square as most are at home to eat dinner.
Elijah has been home to take a shower and change clothes. Now he has returned to arrive in good time. He orders a single drink to calm his nerves.
Precisely, his uneasiness is more due to his excited expectations. He has never imagined that he would get married and now it is unthinkable that he should not.
Elijah accepts the glass that the bartender hands over the bar counter and takes a small sip.
With the glass in hand, he goes up the stairs to the first floor.
He enters the large room above the bar and looks towards the stage. A wedding arch is made ready for them with red roses.
He stands in front of the stage to wait for her. She will arrive before long.
Outside the Waterside Warble, the first guests have appeared. They stand for a moment and hesitate in front of the unusual wedding venue.
“Come on Marcus, we can’t keep them waiting.” Jade says, walking forward with quick steps.

Evening at the public hospital
It is an elderly midwife who conducts the first examination of Izumi to form a picture of how imminent the birth is.
“You’re only a few centimeters dilated so the birth won’t be before sunrise.” she says curtly.
“But my wife has been having contractions for several hours now.” Rasmus protests.
“That may be, but the cervix must be at least ten centimeters dilated so you might as well prepare for a long night. Try to get some sleep and make yourself as comfortable as possible. I’ll come back later.” she replies.
“I’m so sorry baby. Is there anything I can do?” Rasmus says.
“No, Rasmus, I was just hoping that the countdown was almost over.” Izumi replies.
“I’m so sorry you’re suffering. I’m right nearby. If you need me, call!” Rasmus whispers and gives her a kiss on the forehead.
Izumi feels miserable. Where is the sweet midwife they spoke to when they went for a pregnancy check-up? She’s not sure she trusts the brusque old woman on duty tonight.
*****
Izumi’s flirtatious cheerfulness has completely left her in return for a pained frown. Rasmus has helped her under the covers and even though she has already slept several times during the day she will soon find peace in her sleep again.
Rasmus sits down on the sofa in the room. He gives a big yawn. It has been a very long day, with many unfamiliar impressions. He can finally let go of responsibility and no longer make decisions he does not feel competent to make. There are in the hospital now and there are doctors on duty all night.
He settles down on the couch to take a nap. Shortly after, they are both asleep.
A thin curtain separates them from everyday life outside.
The light is on in street lamps and behind the city’s facades. A long night is just about to start.
To be continued next chapter…

Author’s note: This is the end of a very long countdown. When I chose to use PandaSama’s Child Birth Mod, it turned out that childbirth is a very long process. I have had quite a few challenges with this chapter due to updates in the game and due to personal considerations. It’s a relief to finally let it go.
